I have had this juicer for a little over a month now. I don't play the buy something unknown online without seeing/trying, and gamble with what you're gettin game, so I got it at the local Sears which seemed to be the only place around that sold a juicer, even here in San-Angelo-Juana, CA megalopolis. Plus I needed a juicer that day after water fasting. I hate to review so soon (before it dies prematurely like most of the crap we're sold these days, albeit at "quality" prices still!), but I want to do it before I forget. I have gotten a hell of a lot of use out of it already though...
Mine was $35 +whatever they've slowly incremented taxes up to now. Certainly not worth the price. A small motor with a few mass produced injection molded plastic parts, and a cheap stainless skin thrown over the base. Of course it is only crap 400 series stainless like they use in all these other "fancy/yuppie/debtor" consumer appliances, but they still charge as if it were quality 300 series.
I'd like to tell you not to buy it, but I have no recommendations on alternatives, unless you have $3600 for a Zumex or something. That Breville 800 looks like it's designed to work better, but haven't tried it @~$200. Or maybe the Dynajuicer @$400. Norwalk is of course the best all around & gets the most juice out of everything but is $2500! At least its not a crap Black & Decker made in TJ I guess (I haven't seen any Cuisinart factories in TJ yet- but then why not, everyone else including Sony, Panasonic, Honeywell, Kenworth, etc, etc are). I'd say that if you are only going to make up to 8oz of juice, then it will do the job w/o too much hassle.
I have put mine through its paces as I drink a quart of OJ with every meal 3x/day for colitis, which I'm sure is many times more than it was designed to make or most people will use it for. So about 40 oranges/day.
The reamer scrapes out oranges really well, although I can already see that the plastic edges on mine are slightly worn and not as "sharp" (granted after ~10 lbs oranges/day)... still got a long way to go with it's 3 yr warranty. The motor doesn't seem to bog down much, just a little noisier if you're pressing too hard- just let it do its work. It probably scrapes too good for such a little pulp basket/strainer. It has some kind of mechanical reversing mechanism to spin the reamer the other direction every now and then- which has no rhyme or reason to it and just reverses when ever the hell it wants. I've had it go through 15 oranges without reversing before so I don't know; not a big deal to me since one direction gets it all anyway.
The strainer sucks- you will get lots of pulp in the drain tray beneath, big pieces too, sometimes seeds, clogging the drain hole (too small) which drains to the spout and into your cup. Smaller, riper oranges with less pulp aren't as big a problem, but with average oranges it fills up the strainer by 8oz of juice and you have to rinse it all out and usually unclog the drain hole. I sometimes have to clean it out 4-5 times to make a quart.
The drain tray is very small and often fills up with juice due to clogging and overflows very easily. The tray is like a doughnut with a hole in the center for the reamer/motor shaft to stick up through, and the inner tray wall around this shaft is shorter than the outer wall- so when you're juicing and it looks like you're filling up with juice at the outer wall, you've probably already overflowed the inner wall down onto the motor housing- must be sealed pretty good cuz I haven't been zapped yet. The spout is only 5" high and stick out 0.75" so only certain cups will fit under it. I have to use a 4 qt. measuring cup with a wire strainer over it to catch juice.
The lid is a fairly clear polycarbonate, which I highly doubt is PBA free and not non-toxic, simply due to this cancer stage of capitalism/ endless-growth-economics we're in with it's never ending need for MORE profit ensuring that we receive the cheapest materials available, regardless of any health affects. But it's pretty sturdy considering I have to put the top on and continually beat the crap out of it 3x/day to try and unclog the drain hole while juicing.
It has a fast spin which actually does do a decent job of extracting more juice from the pulp in the strainer. After reaming out oranges w/pulp in the strainer, put the top on and press down- with no oranges to slow it down, the no load speed of the motor is much fsster, slinging more juice out the pulp. Note that even the slightest bit of pulp around or under the strainer is enough to keep it from spinning fast though; even too much juice in the tray will slow it down.
The cord is 26", which is a bit too short for my needs.
If you overflow juice and it gets under one of the rubber feet, the juicer will no longer hold steady while juicing. As soon as you press down to start, the base will whip around with your juice pouring out the spout all over. Definitely need to keep the feet/counter dry. Sometimes the cord comes out of its little notch in the back too, which keeps it from setting correctly.
Funny, after 100+ washings, the sticker on the tray has not even begun to come off; yet the Cuisinart ink on the base is mostly gone.
Just another crap small sppliance if you ask me- but what can we do? The rampant philosophy is for Cheap junk options to be created in order to "give value" and/or persuade us to buy the more expensive option. After struggling with this thing, trying to make it do more than it's designed, I'm getting me an automatic juicer where i can just put oranges in the top and have juice come out the bottom... no more pains, but since it's so small I'll keep this little one and take it with me when I eat away from home.
